Living in the Airport Terminal:Japanese Man Offered A Home

If you’ve seen the movie “The Terminal” with Tom Hanks, it may have seemed like something only possible in the past. However, recently a Japanese man who had been living in Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City in terminal one has been in the news. Nohara has been sleeping there since Sept 2nd but someone recently invited him to live in her home.

There isn’t a lot of information about why he lived in the terminal for three months since he wasn’t forced to do so. In the movie with Tom Hanks, Navorski was detained due to the war situation in Eastern Euroupe.

Mexico’s TV News followed Nohara around regularly and reported on his life at the food court. People donated clothing to him and bought him meals. It wasn’t too clear why he was staying in the airport since he has a visa till March 2009. He was quoted as saying, “I don’t understand why I’m here. I don’t have a reason.” The Japanese embassy was not successful in persuading him to leave. The woman who took him in to her home was reported to be a regular visitor. He was described as peaceful by a janitor at the airport.

He does look peaceful. Airport terminal food courts at least kept him able to eat. Maybe he felt homeless. I hope he’s ok. I know that the food in certain airports is pretty good and there are lots of interesting travelers.
